Suburban Hockey offers free and subsidised hockey coaching sessions in schools curriculum time or in school clubs, for children between the ages of 8 and 13 years old. All the sessions are delivered by qualifed and experienced coaches, many of who play international level hockey. At the end of each term the children are invited to take part in a tournament at a local hockey club. The hockey sessions are fun for the children, aiming to build their fitness, inspire them to play sport, attract them to hockey and provide them with the basic skills for future participation. The coaches use the “Quicksticks” syllabus, England Hockey’s game designed specifically for ages 7-12. Suburban Hockey plans to put the “Play” back into the playground and get the children active and having fun.
Suburban Hockey aims to bridge the social gap by taking hockey to children in a wider community and by offering opportunities for more children to enjoy the sport at club level in the future. Will Fulker, Director of Coaching at Suburban Hockey, comments, ” We are providing an experience that can enrich a child’s life, giving them not only a skill in a sport, but a boost for their confidence too. We want them to aspire to be great players. It was thrilling watching our Olympic players competing a couple of years ago and it has inspired a generation to try hockey. Perhaps the local schools contain some of our future Olympic stars too. We would like to find them!”
Lord Moynihan, Chairman of the British Olympic Association, called for “a shake-up in teacher training and told Ofsted to report on schools that fail to provide their children with enough sport“. He said that “children are failing to get access to high quality sports tuition, particularly in primary schools, because teachers lack the expertise to properly deliver the subject.” Suburban Hockey aims to provide this high level of coaching and bring inspirational sports coaching to our schools. We are there to support teachers and to teach them how to deliver a successful hockey programme to their schools.
Suburban Hockey is also offering a number of annual bursaries for talented children who would otherwise be unable to afford to join a hockey club. These are our “Shining Star” Awards and in the past few months we have had five children who have benefitted from the Award.
If you would like to have a hockey coach in your school please contact Gill on firstname.lastname@example.org. A specially tailored package can be created for your school.
The programme is funded by sponsorship, donations and in some cases the schools themselves. Suburban Hockey is a registered charity, working in association with Surbiton Hockey Club (SHC) in the Kingston and Elmbridge areas and with Cheam Hockey Club in the Sutton and Cheam area, with Ashford Hockey Club and Staines Hockey Club. Thanks to a Big Lottery Fund grant and funding from Surrey Hockey Association we have also started to work in the Southwark area of South London. During the summer term we are coaching in 13 schools in the areas and are running a community hockey club – the Southwark Tigers Hockey Club – on Friday evenings from 4pm – 6pm in Burgess Park, SE5.
A grant from Sport England will see us able to work with 6 secondary schools in the Elmbridge and Spelthorne areas this autumn too. We are happy to work with other hockey clubs in their areas.
Suburban Hockey runs a Schools League for primary school in the Elmbridge/Kingston areas. Monthly after school competition sessions are organised at Surbiton Hockey Club and schools are encouraged to join in. The aim is to encourage the children to take their new hockey skills onto the pitch and start playing matches. 7 schools are currently involved and the new dates for the autumn will be published shortly. The league will be extended to other areas too.
Suburban Hockey is currently sponsored by The Buffini Chao Foundation, Surrey Hockey Association and Enterprise Rent-a-Car. Grants have been received from the St Olave’s Foundation Fund, London Sport, The Headley Trust, the Community Foundation for Surrey and The Big Lottery Fund.
Suburban Hockey works in partnership with Living Hockey and has the support of Active Surrey, Burgess Sports, Elmbridge Borough Council and England Hockey.
