Benedict Williams from Avenue Primary in Cheam received a “Shining Star” Award at the Cheam Schools hockey tournament yesterday. On a wet, cold April evening, 11 year old Ben stood out as a star player and was selected for the award which offers a year’s free membership at Cheam Hockey Club. Club Chairperson, Sarah Jones, was on hand to speak to Ben and his mother at the tournament and offered her congratulations to him.

Around 30 children from four schools participated in the event at Nonsuch High School, the home pitch for Cheam Hockey Club. The youngsters enjoyed masterclass coaching from 1st XI players from Cheam HC and from Suburban Hockey coaches, a demonstration of goal scoring with coach Ben Rooney shooting at Tommy Alexander in goal, followed by a series of matches for the children to experience competitive play on a proper astro pitch.
All the children were rewarded with certificates and t-shirts and had their energy levels replenished with plenty of crisps, sweets and biscuits!
