Just a quick note to all the coaching staff who welcomed 1st Hinchley Wood Beavers to Surbiton Hockey Club last week. The boys arrived with the requisite gum shields and shin pads. (The gumshields having been sorted by Suburban Hockey the week before). So here’s the situation; 25 small boys excited and unskilled versus 4 young coaches – seems like an even match. But wait, someone is handing out sticks all round. This could go horribly wrong. However thanks to the hard work and professionalism of Will Fulker, Dave Bartram, Chris Grassick and James Royce the coaches, the boys had a fantastic time. They loved the drills, the skills, the thrills and spills of a brand new sport. Every one of the boys was blown away by the experience. They played a game at the end and all joined in with energy and enthusiasm . Parents were greeted by smiles as wide as a goalmouth and ”pester power” about joining the Club and playing hockey every week began in earnest. I hope the Club get some new members from this visit, but even if it doesn’t, I’m sure hockey will be a winner in the end. All I can say is please pass on all our thanks to Will and the coaches for the warm and professional welcome we received. It was really enjoyable and great to be able to connect with another local ‘activity’. Your biggest worry now is we’ll want to come back soon.
